Siegfried
SF01PreludeIntro1:29Deep in a forest cave a dwarf smith dreams of a golden Ring. His hammer starts on the anvil, sparks fly along the whole roof, and the forge roars until he throws the hammer down.SF02The BearIntro1:24A horn rings out of the forest and young Siegfried storms in driving a bear, which chases the dwarf round and round the forge until Siegfried laughs and sends it back to the woods.SF03The Broken SwordIntro1:22The dwarf holds out a gleaming new sword. Siegfried tries it, smashes it to pieces on the anvil, and storms at him.SF04The Starling SongIntro1:25Mime whines about how he raised the boy, and Siegfried will not hear it. He wants to know who his parents were, and at last the dwarf tells him: Siegmund and Sieglinde.SF05The Pieces of NothungIntro1:22The dwarf shows the boy the shattered pieces of his father's sword. Siegfried orders it mended by nightfall and storms out of the cave into the forest.SF06The WandererIntro1:20A stranger in a deep blue cloak walks into the dwarf's cave with a spear in his hand, and every step he takes washes the house in blue. He strikes the spear down and the forge cowers.SF07Three RiddlesIntro1:29A wager of heads: the dwarf asks the stranger three riddles, and the house becomes the dark Nibelung forges, the giants' land and the gods' castle in turn. Then the stranger asks the one question the dwarf cannot answer.SF08FearIntro1:23Alone in the cave, the dwarf sees fire leaping everywhere and a dragon closing in. Siegfried bursts back in and sweeps it all away: he has never been afraid, and wants to learn how.SF09Nothung! Nothung!Intro1:27Siegfried sings his Sword Song, files the broken sword to dust, and works the bellows until the forge roars across the whole house and the steel melts, while the dwarf brews poison in the corner.SF10The Anvil SplitsIntro1:27The red-hot blade hisses in the water and is hammered into Nothung to the Forging Song. Siegfried raises the new sword and brings it down on the anvil, which splits in two from end to end of the house.SF11NeidhöhleIntro1:26Night in the forest outside a dragon's cave. The dragon's music crawls out of the dark in great heaving waves, a curse slashes across the house, and a dwarf creeps up to keep watch.SF12Alberich's WatchIntro1:29A dwarf keeps watch outside the cave in the dark. A rush of blue storm-light brings the Wanderer, and blue and red fight for the house.SF13Waking the DragonIntro1:26The Wanderer and the dwarf shout into the cave. Two red eyes open, a huge voice asks who disturbs its sleep, then yawns and goes back to sleep. The Wanderer vanishes in a gust of blue.SF14Dawn in the ForestIntro1:29The sun comes up through the trees in great gold shafts as the dwarf leads Siegfried to the cave. He tells him about the dragon, until Siegfried chases him off.SF15Forest MurmursIntro1:26Siegfried lies under a tree and the whole forest comes alive in rolling waves of green and gold. A magenta bird darts through the branches, singing to him.SF16The Reed PipeIntro1:29Siegfried tries to answer a woodbird on a reed pipe and fails, three times. So he blows his horn instead, loud enough to fill the forest, and something in the cave opens its eyes.SF17FafnerIntro1:12The dragon wakes and crawls out of its cave: a huge mass of scales filling the porch, with red eyes, a lashing tail, and fire it breathes from one end of the house to the other.SF18The Dragon FightIntro1:21Siegfried and the dragon fight across the whole house: leaps, fire, a lashing tail and the clash of the sword, until one blow goes into the dragon's heart.SF19The Dragon's BloodIntro1:25The dying dragon whispers a warning and sinks into its cave. Siegfried tastes its burning blood, and suddenly he can understand what the woodbird is singing.SF20The Ring and the TarnhelmIntro1:25The bird tells Siegfried to take the Ring and the magic helmet from the hoard. While he is in the cave, two dwarfs fight over the treasure, and he comes out with the Ring shining gold.SF21The Poisoned DrinkIntro1:28Mime comes to Siegfried all sweetness, but now Siegfried can hear what he really means, in green flashes of poison. Mime holds out a poisoned drink, and the sword strikes him down.SF22The Woodbird LeadsIntro1:29The bird sings of a bride asleep on a mountain inside a ring of fire. Siegfried has to find her, and he races after the bird across the whole house and away.SF23Erda WakesIntro1:27A storm at the foot of the fire-ringed rock. The Wanderer strikes the ground three times with his spear, and Erda, the earth mother, rises out of the ground in a swell of green.SF24The Last QuestionIntro1:27Erda has no answer for the Wanderer. He wills the end of the gods himself, sees the world pass to a young hero in a blaze of green and gold, and sends the earth mother back into the ground.SF25The Spear BreaksIntro1:26The Woodbird leads Siegfried to the foot of the rock, where the Wanderer bars the way. Blue and green fight for the house until one stroke of the sword shatters the spear and the old god is gone.SF26Through the FireIntro1:23Siegfried blows his horn and plunges into the magic fire. The flames roar out over the whole house as he runs through them, and when they sink back he is standing at the top beside a sleeping figure.SF27Das ist kein Mann!Intro1:23At the top of the fire-ringed rock Siegfried finds a sleeper in armour. He lifts the shield and helmet, cuts the armour away, and finds a woman, and for the first time in his life he is afraid.SF28Heil dir, Sonne!Intro1:29Siegfried kisses the sleeping Brünnhilde and she wakes. Night turns to sunrise across the whole house as she greets the sun, the light and the shining day.SF29Ewig war ichIntro1:30In the sunrise, Brünnhilde is afraid of losing herself, and pulls away. Siegfried's love answers her in slow, broad swells of colour round the house, until the two of them reach for each other.SF30Leuchtende LiebeIntro1:30The end of the opera. Siegfried and Brünnhilde sing faster and faster, laughing at death, until the whole house blazes emerald, silver and gold on four great chords.SF31IntermissionIntermission5:00The house becomes a sunlit forest while bright green-gold closes in toward the porch, counting down five minutes; a magenta Woodbird flits in each minute, and a brass fanfare calls everyone back.
