Thanksgiving Variety
TG01WishboneIntro1:30A tug of war across the porch: the wishbone sways, creaks and nearly snaps, one hand slips, they grip again, and it breaks, flinging both halves to the ends of the house. Gold makes the wish.TG02Is It Done Yet?Intro1:30The porch is the oven and the Right wing is the timer. The family keeps opening the door, heat pours out, the cook stands guard and swats them away, a false ding, then the real one.TG03Leaf FallIntro1:30Leaves waltz down on the beat and drift into piles at the corners. A gust tosses them, a whirlwind spins the porch, the trees let go, and one big gust blows every pile out the end of the house.TG04ParadeIntro1:30A brass band marches along the roof with giant balloons: a rolling pumpkin, an ear of corn that pops, and a turkey pumped up until he bursts and his untied head zooms round the house.TG05The Big GameIntro1:30Football on the roof, with the porch as the sky: passes arc up and over the porch, a fumble bounces along it, and a Hail Mary from the back of the house ends in a touchdown and a stadium wave.TG06Pass the PieIntro1:30The porch is a pumpkin pie, cut and passed hand to hand round the table. Two hands creep toward the last slice, the dog snatches it, everyone chases him round the house, and out comes a second pie.TG08CornucopiaIntro1:30A horn of plenty pours pumpkins, apples, corn and cranberries across the house until one pumpkin gets stuck. It pops, a cranberry flies out the far end, sneaks back in, and the horn erupts.TG11Turkey TrotIntro1:30The morning 5K, all the way round the house. A pack in bright colours races past the water station, round the block and back, and a runner in a turkey costume sprints for the tape at the porch.TG12StrutIntro1:30A proud tom fans his tail across the porch, struts, and duels a rival gobble for gobble, then puffs up until his tail fills the whole house. Then someone rings the dinner bell.TG13Gravy BoatIntro1:30A mashed-potato mountain fills the porch and the gravy boat pours into the well, and keeps pouring. The dam breaks, gravy floods the roof, and a levee of bread rolls and a giant spoon come to the rescue.TG14HayrideIntro1:30A tractor pulls a hay wagon around the house at dusk, past glowing pumpkins and corn. It bumps, stops at the pumpkin patch to load up, and comes home lit by lanterns.TG15Kitchen RushIntro1:30The last hour before dinner. Four burners boil over in turn, timers ring, pans clang, the mixer whirs and the smoke alarm goes off, and then every dish lands on the table at exactly the same moment.TG16Cranberry BogIntro1:30Harvest at the cranberry bog. The sluice bursts and water sloshes the length of the house, two beaters collide and burst the berries free, and yellow booms heave a sea of red into the porch.TG17SouthboundIntro1:30A V of geese crosses the sunset. A headwind knocks them into a knot, the leader drops back, a late straggler overshoots the whole flock, and they wheel round and fill the house before flying off.TG18Here They ComeIntro1:30The relatives arrive. Headlights sweep up to the porch, the doorbell rings again and again, each family bursts in its own colour, and the house becomes one big conga line until the group hug.TG07CandlelightAll night2:40A long table of candles down the porch and in the windows, each with its own halo. When someone walks past, the draft reaches each flame in turn and it leans, sways and settles.TG09Food ComaAll night2:30After dinner the house dozes. Light is drawn in to the porch on every slow breath and let out to the ends, with the occasional snore, a whistle, and Z's drifting off the back.TG10Amber WavesAll night2:50The roof is a strip of wheat field. Slow gusts bend it, and the bending rolls on as waves that turn the corners, echo off the free ends and cross each other, gold on one side, amber shadow on the other.TG20IntermissionIntermission5:00The house glows plum and fills with golden wheat toward the porch over five minutes while autumn leaves land and skitter ahead of it and a chime counts the minutes. When it is full, the dinner bell rings, the leaves blow away and the show begins.
